British public schools exported to China

The BBC's George Alagiah reports on the rise of fee-paying schools in China which mirror British public schools. The schools are in contrast to the state system in China, with an emphasis on creativity and inquiry.

Amidst the growth of the glass and concrete grown of the city of Tianjin is Wellington College, a replica of the Berkshire school, there are 300 students mainly from the ex-patriate community but with a growing number of Chinese students. Mimi Zhoh is only 5 years old but her prestigious piano playing talent, has already seen her perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Mimi's parents pay more than £15000 a year in fees, they are doing more than buying an education, they are investing in a way of life. Her parents do not want her to endure the 24-7 life in China and in the future, want her to study abroad.

In light of the new visa restrictions for Chinese students coming to the UK,  David Cook, Master of Wellington College,in Tianjin, believes Chinese government should make it easier as possible for Chinese students to come to study in Britain, because the alternative means they are almost inevitable to go America to study.

Bad Education BBC3 Racist Sitcom

Bad Education is a BBC3 sitcom written by Jack Whitehall, set in Abbey Grove School, a fictional state secondary school overrun with puerile predictable yawn-festing caricatures - the draconian deputy headmistress, the dexterously challenged teacher and the delinquent school children. Comatosed by this worthless piece of impoverished white-centric 'comedy' writing, any eye twitching interest is limited to the racist portrayal of Chinese student Jing played by Kae Alexander.

Racially humiliating the Chinese for the pleasure of generating cheap laughs for the White audience is considered ironic cutting edge British comedy. Bad Education's Facebook fan base (predominantly White, some Black) were highly amused by the Sinophobia...'that was so funny!'
It begs a question, why do British East Asian actors continually play these racially debilitating roles? Is she blonde? 'She's Chinese you muppet!' Really? With a 'Chinese' name like 'Kae Alexander,' we shouldn't really be surprised by the actions of these white-loving anglicized Asians, should we? (Bad Education Review by BBCZeitgeist)

In China, English Teaching Is A Whites-only Club

Teaching English abroad is a popular option for BBC's who have become jaded with their UK-based lifestyle,  and for many BBC's with their native homeland in Hong Kong,  in the current economic climate, the switch to teaching English in the Far East is an obvious choice, especially when many have relatives or family members they are able to stay with, before finding more permanent accommodation.

In the following example that compares the application of an East Asian ( in this case, a Korean American ) to a White American, an article that investigates white privilege in English Teaching schools in China only now has been brought to the attention of mainstream press, specifically an American publication, MSN News, but maybe subtly looks at it from a slightly sinophobic angle in that 'Chinese are even racist against their own' without once mentioning 'white privilege'
"The discrimination comes, Evans said, because Chinese parents simply do not believe a non-white person can possibly be a native speaker. Thus, this logic continues, hiring a white person is the simplest and easiest way to ensure that the teacher is truly fluent.
“I was told that it was nice for parents to see foreign or white-looking teachers around the school,” Evans said, adding that he was encouraged to walk outside and greet parents. Advertisements for English teaching positions are up-front in their bias. A search for “English teacher” in The Beijinger’s classifieds section reveals dozens of ads that include language such as “Job requires American or Canadian white teacher” or “white color is preferred.”
As a BBC, who has some experience of being an English teacher, but not in the Far East, I have experienced discrimination, from foreign students, who often expect a White teacher to teach them English.

Funnily during my time I was teaching, there was another BBC who was teaching there, who had developed a kind of invulnerable happy go lucky attitude, so at the time it did make me think that it was probably my own attitude problem than anything else, which made me think that I was probably not cut out to be an English Teacher.

But whilst Teaching in the Far East, is a definite a career option,  does the fault of choosing white English teachers over British Born Chinese teachers lie with the English schools in China, arguably run by white people or white worshipping FOBS. Or with inherited traits of the English language itself and it's Colonial associations with white privilege?

Chinese Tiger Mothers Spend £100,000 Teaching their Children 'Britishness' for Oxbridge Exams

Full Article :  Daily Mail

Wealthy mainland Chinese families are paying huge sums to British ‘Education consultants’ based in China to give their children the edge in interviews for top UK universities. This behaviour is known as 'Tiger Parenting', a term inspired by Amy 'Tiger Mom' Chua, the woman who wrote a book about her super-strict Chinese parenting style called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.

Such forms of education in China include tutoring topics such as ‘rugby banter’ and how to chat about the perennial British weather - and even tips on how to grasp the English sense of humour.

The practice has been common for the last decade with the country's richest ploughing their vast wealth into tutoring designed to help their children win places at establishments such as Eton College and Harrow.

This has now moved on to cover further education in order to improve the childrens' chances of winning coveted spots and Oxford and Cambridge.

BE Education in China placed more than 20 Chinese students in UK universities - many who attend the classes with their own bodyguards.

In some cases this has involved being taken to British-style pubs in China to watch international rugby fixtures as well as attending drama classes to increase their confidence.

ESF KITCHEE Hong kong Football Match Sparks White Chinese Racism Row

The 10 year old Caucasian boy (#2) arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm after violently kicking a Chinese opponent in the head during an under 12's school football match between ESF Lions and Kitchee Escola has been bailed.

The video generated a torrent of 'racist' commentary.

"These are English Men... Shame of mankind!" wrote one viewer on the YouTube website. Others called the coach and mainly Caucasian players for the English Schools Foundation (ESF) team "animals" and "white scum", and demanded the government stop subsidising the English-language school system. "The Hong Kong government should cancel its funding of the ESF. Gweilos should leave Hong Kong immediately," said one user.

Full Article Here

BBCZEITGEIST COMMENTARY: Reading western press articles, white journalists considered the term gweilo to be racially offensive by playing the race card. Its an attempt to negate the damage inflicted onto the Chinese boy by turning the issue into a race row, i.e the white boy is victimised because of his Caucasian ethnicity! I have not seen evidence of an actual racism beyond Youtube commenting. Incidently, there are also comments calling Chinese 'chinks,' but the western press conveniently forget to mention that.

Is the British Education System Inherently Racist Towards British Born Chinese?

We've all had to go through the British education system, whether you are an overseas student , Hapa, or British Born Chinese.

Guess who has the potential to come out the worst?

In most British schools you are taught British history. You are lied to about how 'Great' Britain is. Britain - the home of western social engineering and China is the one country that Britain failed to conquer despite its best opium efforts, and add to its little collection of colonies that made up the British Empire.

Typically, both immigrant Chinese, Hapas, and also British Born Chinese as hard working middle class , make the best efforts to send their children to the best education.

But whilst hapas can climb the ranks of the white elite, and children of immigrants, once graduating, unless continuing their further education in a British College or university, can go home and show off their well spoken english accent to their Hong Kong or mainlander family and friends.

For us British Born Chinese, there is little advantage that can come away from a public school education except a posh accent, casual racism that is supposed to 'toughen us up', which we can either fight back against, or be temporarily beaten down by.

With the lack of parental understanding provided by 1st gen / overseas parents for your situation, despite not knowing the figures, one can only imagine the 'casual racism taunts' that with no real ethnic social group to have standing by to support your Chineseness, and the extent you may have to suffer casual racism if you dont 'toughen up' at school- whether day school, boarding school, or regular comprehensive.

Indeed the only option one has from leaving a British education, whether public or comprehensive is joining in the social life , that probably was developed during the miserable teen years spent at school, in order to 'fit in', and this is left to develop further at university where we due to our lack of chinese social groups ( typically immigrant Chinese societies, whilst hapas conveniently ignore their chinese side to climb the ranks of the in-groups) , Again we either learn to embrace this culture  such as going to magaluf, getting drunk, taking drugs. Later on this disparity can lead to identity crisis and the need to fit in, /or we are lost and the cultural anomoly continues.

For boys, unless embracing the British Culture we are left to our own devices, unless we happen to be show-offs, socially  extraverted extroadinaires, and for girls, end up with white partners in their desperate hope to fit in and eventually outbreed the socially engineered self-hatred.

Truly the British educational system is where the British Chinese destruction begins. And unless Chinese people are welcomed wholeheartedly and not just paid lip service, and the two-faced social engineering takes a rest from demonising China and it's people , without a stronger British Born culture, this travesty will continue, and sadly create many more casualties of future British Born Chinese, causing psychological damage that no untold amount of money can fix.

Now if only us Chinese/future parents truly appreciated the power of politics and cultural identity, we could maybe do something to make life easier for those future potential victims?
