Goldie Cheung X factor 2011

Judges Tulisa Contostavlos, Kelly Rowland and Louis Walsh looked on in horror in tonight's opening episode of The X Factor, as Chinese contestant Goldie Cheung writhed around on Gary Barlow's lap.

48-year-old Goldie Cheung, a tai chi instructor from Hong Kong almost didn't make it on stage after being sick several times before arriving at her audition, but after some deliberation, she appeared in front of the judges wearing a skimpy black and red ensemble.

And things were about to get even more risqué, when Goldie broke into a rendition of Copper Bell by Anita Mui, treating Gary to a provocative dance in the process.

BBCZeitgeist Commentary: Having investigated this story, not all is as it appears, Goldie Cheung is in fact Goldie Webb Cheung 豹姨  - She has performed her routines many times for public audiences including Hong Kong TVB Channel in front of a panel that included Aaron Kwok.

Facebook Goldie Cheung fan page accumulated 600+ members overnight after her tasteless performance was broadcast on X Factor on Saturday night - with its fair share of racist comments from non-Chinese posters.
"Hello ting tong hahaha"
"ding dong ding ding ding ding dung ooooh ding ching chung ding dong! ooooh ching chang chong ooooh!"
When performed to a western audience, Goldie Cheung is labelled the Chinese Tina Turner or perhaps more apt...the Dragon Lady meets William Hung. This begs the question, can Chinese acts, in particular FOB acts on western talent shows only appeal to western audiences if they're a joke, as something to laugh at?

What is the Chinese verdict? Have your say, post your comment below or perhaps call her and tell her yourself. Her business mobile number is 07733341822

  2. Chinese hardly appears on British TV, and when they do, it's usually something bad/embarrassing.

  4. Oh man, what is a old chicken like that prancing on stage doing!!?!!!?
Embarrassing, i don't believe she realises she is so bad, the sad thing is that the programme makers are encouraging it, and secretly taking the mick.

  8. I looked on her facebook page - there aren't really a "fair share" of racist comments. One or two in fact, the one's that you listed. Bit of an exaggeration, yet again!

  9. Her son was probably conceived as a result of that performance, although her white husband probably asked her sing sucky sucky 10 dollar instead of copperbell.

  10. you know what, its not so much that her performance is embarassing. its the way that x-factor framed it - they probably called up a hong kong agent. judging from the aaron kwok video above she no doubt does this for a living in uk, and x-factor paid for her to perform.

basically, she is doing what she does, but because its on UK tv, and we are used to seeing chinese women as being portrayed as dragon women, her presence only reminds us of this.

whether there were 20 or 30 racist comments or 2 or 3 on her facebook page makes no difference. its the lack of positive images we have had of chinese women on british tv in general, ( eg dvd eastenders woman, etc ) and in this case, women, that makes her act into a suggestively racist portrayal. her being a FOB probably, typically, wasnt aware of this .

and this is exactly why chinese - all chinese - need to be aware of insidious racist western media.

  11. I doubt she has a Hong Kong agent, shes a British citizen, that was a global talent show on TVB, she was representing the UK. Its matter of interpretation, for example no doubt a lot of older white men with Asian feitsh will think what she's doing is very positive.

Not really, I could have given out her home address. Btw, her phone number is widely advertised for booking tai chi classes and public performances etc, I'm sure theres a plethora of people who would love her to perform her routine for their wedding or...their funeral. Such risque breast rubbing routines are all the rage in some East Asian sub-cultural funerals.

  12. Its also interesing, Catherine Hakim a sociologist at the London School of Economics has published a book called 'Honey Money: The Power Of Erotic Capital,' we all know sex sells, erotic capital is a woman's best asset, Goldie who is a poor singer decided to go straight for the sex sell and made it through to the next round of x-factor. Need we say more? Do you think a Chinese man who performed a song as sexually as that like a Chippendale would have made it through?
