zadig and voltaire racism

- NO DOGS AND CHINAMAN -

Zadig + Voltaire’s New Hotel Will Ban ‘Chinese Tourists’

Thierry Gillier,  Zadig + Voltaire founder

If you make a mistake on the web, people will most definitely see it. And if you try to cover it up, well, that just makes it worse. Case in point: a racist remark in an article about Zadig + Voltaire‘s new hotel in Paris’ Left Bank.

The brand’s founder Thierry Gillier told WWD that a mansion in which the spring 2013 show was just held would become a “high-end hotel” opening in 2014. He calls it “a project dear to our hearts”, and it’s apparently going to be so exclusive that certain people, specifically “Chinese tourists”, are not allowed.

  1. Sadly most ABCs here in the US don't see any issue with this blatant and continuing racism. If anything they say we deserve it because we don't pander, slobber, and act politically correct towards the other racists toward us in this country - black, and brown Latinos. We can't stand up to anyone. It's pathetic. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only Chinese person outraged. I've really lost count how many murders, assaults, robberies, and racist articles have gone down.

    1. What I know about ABCs is at least you have AA media and campaigners against misconstrued media portrayals. It's proportionate - bigger population requires bigger groups of activists. And in the case of consumerism, voting with our Chinese wallet.

Its like in america, as an ethnic Chinese, if you pay for a ticket to see Chinese being slaughtered in films like Men in Black 2, then you are contributing to the sinophobia

As long as middleclass /newly rich mainlander females flock to the disneyland imagined wonders of the western world, continue to patronise western brands, and sleep with white males, this will never end. In many ways Hong Kong being the most 'developed' part of China of China didnt exactly lead a good example.

In the case of Zadig + Voltaire’s 'high end' New Hotel , this french shop is publicly saying no to chinese money - a political attack as well as a sinophobic one. So from now on mainlanders should flat out refuse to patronise these racist Italian French European brand name industries and that fat gweilo frog hotel owner can go fuck himself. But judging how clueless and consumerist FOBS are, its unlikely.

Look at the pathetic french FOBS in this pic

Waving the red white and blue flag at a protest! Unless that pic was specifically chosen to misportray our race( its the british brainwashing corporation website) with that kind of lameness, what else you expect?

  2. It's that European sophistication thing. The Chinese really can't join the club because they have no 'class'. That's what that comment is all about. Even the Hong Kongers are jumping on that, turning on the mainlanders.

Because of the new wealth, the tide of tourists are irritating the old-guard. When I say old guard, I mean the snobby ones who regard that money isn't everything, and what China lacks is not money obviously, it's class.

The west are still stuck on that, and will show their bitter hatred of wealthy people who are not refined. China other than footballers fit that bill nicely. The comment might have slipped out, but I guess, a few might nod in agreement privately.

The reality is, most China nationals will just skim past this and still trip over themselves to get their hands on their latest gear. What's even more strange is, Chinese tourists can just boycott that brand, and they'll be struggling within a year or two. But, why do I get the feeling, the Chinese will not be doing that? SF.

    1. ...whereas the Chinese have been banned before from Parisian fashion houses because their motivation is to create counterfeit copies.

    2. But look at the wording of the owners quote:

“It will be a slightly private hotel, not open to everybody, with 40 rooms. We are going to select guests. It won’t be open to Chinese tourists, for example. There is a lot of demand in Paris — many people are looking for quiet with a certain privacy.”

Theres nothing in that quote that talks about protection of copyright - its a clear stance under the racist suggestion that all Chinese have no class

    3. These Freudian slip-ups says it all. There are too many of us Chinese, and the mass consumerism can actually damage his label's exclusiveness. Then finally, our lack of class.

The Europeans know best about protecting brands through Intellectual Properties. The message is clear, high value is placed on creating small volumes, for which the Chinese are definitely not doing. Sadly, with the new money, many mainlanders fill the malls oblivious of European prejudices about China's image as the powerhouse of mass, therefore not regarded as exclusive and sophisticated.

Class is very much part of the west, and China is not regarded high up when it comes to class. It's the one single thing the west can sting China with in sly ways. But, in my opinion, it's the one last stand remaining that will eventually melt away soon, because China whether the west like it or not, will be a big part of the future.

Zadig and Voltaire may regard themselves as cutting edge and progressive in the world of fashion, but they are simply borrowing from the past snobbery to help themselves create brand awareness. I would love to see China nationals boycott their stores, and see how long they'll last. SF.

    4. well, its not only a class issue, its a race issue too and its an issue about perception and reputation. How are the Chinese tourists perceived by the French? Obviously very negatively. they have a poor reputation.

    5. Yes, theres nothing on worrying about copyright and theres nothing in his statement about class either. This is how were intrepreting it by implication.

  3. @BBCz Why do you use the ethnic slur "Japs" when referring to Japanese people? Would you not be offended if Chinese people were referred to as "Chinks"?

    2. Theyve since retratced their statement. Their policy was only a consideration, the hotel isn't even completed nor open for business yet, so the law can't be applied yet can it?

    3. Isn't it the case that many exclusive places even Golf Clubs and other sports clubs refuse entry to 'certain' people. I remember the Borat TV show, Borat goes to a Bowls Club and asks the manager if everyone is welcome at the club. They said yes. He then said....'even gypsies?' Er, no, gypsies would not be welcome.

"This is obviously racial discrimination. Not every Chinese is uncultivated, there are many more who are cultured," said one user on popular Chinese social network Sina.com.

"I think this pretentious brand will lose an important market if it really turns down Chinese."

Looks like the owner was too late to apologize to the whitelicking FOBS haha

  5. Totally agreed. If Chinese could be more cohesive we would have unbridled power.

  6. the last time i seen a similar notice is in Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury: "No Chinese or Dogs allowed", which Brucy takes on the LorBatTaus and perserves the Kung Fu School Sign, I heard rumours that Edison Chen and Cecilia are considering a remake, it's called "Fist of Furry" that will ruffle a few feathers or hairs.
